Everyone in Washington "claims" they have read it, but most of them have only
thumbed through it or pulled quotes from it (as I pull a quote from my favorite
online Tocqueville resource site).

One of my favorite quotes is actually de Tocqueville quoting Thomas Jefferson,
who said, "The executive power in our government is not the only, perhaps not
even the principal, object of my solicitude. The tyranny of the legislature is
really the danger most to be feared, and will continue to be so for many years
to come. The tyranny of the executive power will come in its turn, but at a
more distant period."

This from the guy who single-handedly doubled the size of the country with the
Lousiana Purchase.

>Does anyone know if Bush or Cheyney has read de Tocqueville?
