1. Select the table in Word. (Hover over the table, until you see the
table crosshair in the top-left corner of the table.  Right-click on
this.)
2. Copy to the clipboard.
3. Open Excel, paste the content.

The formatting should be retained.

You can also do a "Paste Special" which lets you remove any formatting.

Is there an easy way to convert a word doc to a spreadsheet? The doc is
one big table and you'd think it should be easy to convert it to a Excel
file but I'll be damned if I ca find out how!
