Leapfrog's are neat - but definitely for older kids.

They make several models - but the "youngest" one is still for 3-4 yr olds.
LeapFrogs use a pen interface - it requires quite a bit of coordination.

I don't think that sex matters much at that age - boys and girls are both
into the same kind of things.  Soft, colorful, tactile.  My son and daughter
both liked essentially the same toys up until around 2 years old.

Stuffed animals, board books, large trucks, etc.

Just leave the noise making things out of consideration - the parents will
thank you.  ;^)
