The difference between what is happening with this issue in the Middle East and some examples of social protest cited here (e.g. Freedom Fries) is that the boycott was sparked, not by the actions of a government, but by the actions of a private company practicing legally protected speech.
As for the issue of the Piss Christ and other social protests by religious conservatives in this country, I don't remember anyone boycotting all companies originating in New York because of Piss Christ. The personal and cultural affront is justified, but the object of these people's anger is misplaced. What's more, they are hurting their own countrymen, all the people who work for this Danish company in the Middle East. Who really suffers here? Are they hurting the company? Yes, albeit they are hurting the local employees of the company most. Are they hurting Denmark? Not in any significant way. Are they hurting the paper that actually published the cartoon? Not in the least. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:5:195222 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:5 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.5 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
