Oh - I knew it could do both, but the question is where things are kept and accessible from. Apple maintains two fluid "partitions" on the iPod (all models) storage. One is accessible only by iTunes and the synch processes, the other is accessible when you use the device as a PnP USB disk. For music at least you can't copy music to the "USB disk" partition and use them on the iPod. I'm not sure if photos are under the same restriction. (This isn't specific to the Nano but to all iPods.)
