I don't think the newspaper should have apologized. Possibly refrained from printing to begin with, recognizing that it is potentially offensive. However, they are entitled to make offensive political comments if they choose, imho, and since they chose to do so there was no reason to apologize. I can't believe they did not realize agead of time that some people would be offended.
