Liking it has nothing to do with it. Living in the Virginia suburbs and
driving the beltway into Maryland does not mean you know the city you are
driving around. Going to an occasional show across the river and a couple of
miles away does not mean that you have any idea where Anacostia is, let
alone what it is like there ;) 

Yes, crime is moving out into PG County, but that doesn't mean it doesn't
exist. Two hundred murders a year is still very high. especially when they
are almost all on one side of town. I'd be willing to bet a lot of them are
still unsolved drug murders as well.
