It looks like you can un-install the client and still have all services
working.  Obviously the chat works without the client installed and since it
saves your conversations in your gmail account, It's pretty safe to assume
that google desktop will be able to get what it needs from there.  Like it
can with offline viewing of your email messages.  Pretty nice little suite
google is developing.  Now if they could just put the reader inside of
gmail, I would be quite happy.
