I still trust Google more than I trust my government. But I've never installed Google Desktop since I just assumed they could read it.
There's actually a slightly less reactionary article about the new version here. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060209-6145.html It goes into a bit more depth about what's happening. Basically, the new feature is that you can, for instance, search your work desktop from home. I can see that as being really useful. Of course, to do it, they copy the search index from the work system to Google's servers and then download it to the home system and delete it from the Google server. Still. Not installing it.
