When I was in Boston a few years ago, we noticed that many roofs (near
the gutter) had these iron-like decorations that were mounted to the
roof. Most of the houses had steep-pitch roofs.

I was wondering about the purpose of these. Most of them were very
ornamental, but I doubt that is the only purpose.

Here is my theory: I think these things help prevent small roof
avalanches after a heavy snow.

I can picture someone leaving their house after Boston gets hit with 12"
of snow. This person opens their door, takes a step and then a 20' line
of snow slides down the roof and lands on their head.

I think these devices are situated so that they support the snow and
won't let it slide.

I also believe that these devices will receive heat, from the sun,
distribute heat to the snow so that it may melt a bit faster.

So, that is my theory. How close am I to the truth? And, what the heck
are those things called?

Update: A quick google found these items and they seem to be called
"snow guards".

Thanks
