I don't think the role of the press as a check against abuse of power is 
diminished by this ruling. In Maryland, as in the federal government, the 
legislature and the courts are co-equal branches of government to the 
executive, and they are each the ultimate check to abuse of power in the 
others. The case would be entirely different if the government employee was a 
whistleblower and told a reporter about illegal activities in the government. 

Whatever people think of the NSA wiretapping case, for instance, the current 
ruckus between the courts, Congress, and the President is the normal push and 
pull of constitutional government.
