I picked up a contract that was sent overseas to one of those code mills in India (not meant as a slam against India, just code mills). By the time my customer got his application back, with "hidden" costs, and unexpected "bonuses" to the project manager for completing the project on time, it cost more that it would have cost in the US. On top of all that the app did no where near what it was speced out to do. In the end it cost him an extra 125k US to get the app working the way it should have in the first place. I have three rates, my rate for work I wanna do, work I don't want to do, and one for work I quoted on and didn't get, but you had to come back to me to fix. This customer got rate number three for this project (rate 1 x 2.5)
It was pretty interesting to look at the code. There was a wide range of skill sets and coding styles in code, from very senior to very junior. In the end the code was pretty much a write off tho, and we had to pretty much start from scratch.
