There are a couple of variables here.  One - if the SMTP server is
local, and particularly if you are referring to it by a machine name
or local IP, check the options for something like "Allow access to
local network".

Also, depending on the configuration policy of the firewall's profile,
all traffic may be going through the VPN connetion and at the whim of
the server on the other side, which may be blocking access to your
SMTP server and which you have no control over.  In that case I think
that you may be able to get around it with some clever routing.
