the S-video cable referenced in my post works with all of PS, PS1 and PS2
the PS end of the cable has the proprietary Sony "AV Multi Out" connector
for video and audio
only the tv end of the cable has RCA plugs

BTW speaking of "any old" cable,
when I replaced the cheap "patch cords" which came with the AV equipment
with Monster Cable interconnects, there was a major improvement in quality
