Really? Do you think Jewish folk might point to any middle-eastern paper article and laugh? EVERYTHING is blamed on them.
Or that Fundamentalist Christians don't shiver whenever Eric Rudolph is mentioned? But more to the point, the reason is that these criminals are committing their crimes IN THE NAME OF their religion. And they are not part of a splinter sect (like the Aryan Nation's The Church of Jesus Christ Christian) that has been repudiated by the main religion. They are still good, welcome, accepted members of their congregations, and most Muslims, at least publically, voice more sympathy with them than with their victims. Similar to the stigma that Irish Catholic and Irish Protestants have. It is the inability of outsiders to distinguish between the criminals and those around them and the lack of public outrage by the non-criminals (and worse, the persecution of those who are outraged and speak out) that gets the label applied so broadly.
