50% in the USA, less in other countries. And I would definitely
challenge the assertion that "most of those who diet and exercise".
Fad diets don't really count as a "proper diet". I think the word
diet in this context should not mean to "go on a diet", but to "eat a
proper diet". To eat properly as a lifestyle, not as a temporary
"diet". The same goes for the exercise.

Diet and exercise are no the only criteria, but I would say that they
are possibly the most important criteria. People who are overweight
are unlikely to lose it without both, though some may have different
thresholds for the quantities and type before a difference is seen.
True, some people metabolise differently, and results definitely vary.

I wouldn't say you are alone there. A co-worked of mine who's
participating in our little in-the-office contest is walking 10 miles
a week during lunches, eating right, and is loosing about 2.5 lbs per
week right now without any additional exercise, but I wouldn't expect
everyone to have those kinds of results. Of course overall diet is
also important.

At the end of the day however, the point of this thread was initial
whether or not soda should be considered as ad as cigs and if there
should be some tax or other penalties for soda companies. I still say
that it's pretty obvious that soda's fattening. So are Candy bars,
french fries, and Big Macs. Trying to control people's behavior
through taxes in this way disgusts me. People have free will in this
country and should continue to have it. This may also include the
free will to eat yourself to death.
