>From what I remember when I dug into this a while ago more original marriage
rites were mostly about property (in fact most still are).  In the case of
marriage certifying the female as the property of the male.

The fact that most early societies were polyamourous (one male could have
multiple wives) bolsters this.

As far back as can be remembered women have been traded as property to men.
The idea of an equal marriage, or of men having a hand in child rearing
(especially in early childhood) is very recent.
