I use the Talisman firmware from SveaSoft. I like it a lot but they've come under fire for their policies (they require a $20 fee to access their forums and you can only download the software from their forums). The software is open source thus the controversy. There's information on their site about it. Anyway the firmware is very nice. It only works on some models however (there are models of LinkSys which are not Linux based and this firmware doesn't work on them). The firmware does beef up logging a bit but not a whole lot (you get three logs: Dropped, Rejected and Accepted and the log level can be set to "Low", "Medium" or "High"). But the firmware also gives some great features like a full command shell (great for doing pings and trace routes from the router), lots of quality-of-service stuff, access control by client (you can, for example, only allow the PC in your kids room to access the Internet for specific hours of the day) and more. The main reason I went looking was to get static IP assignments in DHCP and it does that as well. It also gives a LOT of control over the wireless aspect of the card. You can increase transmission power which might give you a signal in that back room you never got a signal in.
