I think the comments have exactly the opposite effect, Mike. By having an ignorant, childish character say such things, obviously not actually meaning it and probably parroting back something they heard, in situations where it doesn't really fit, it highlights just how stupid such epithets are.
It works on me EVERY time. Makes me think for just a second, and run through a quick system check on my own prejudices. Such stereotypes DO exist. And they need to be killed. The most effective way I can imagine is to expose them to light. And to mock them with light humor. Pretending they don't exist just lets them fester in the dark. And angrily denouncing them puts the denouncers in an unfavorable light. See Cindy Sheehan as an example.
