I'd been sayin' that ever since Episode 1 was released. When given the
ability to do whatever he wants, George just churns out utter garbage.
It's only when he's hampered by technology and forced to take years to
work on a piece (and in that time get lots of good advice from people
with a better understanding of the audience than he has), that he's
able to produce anything of even remotely decent quality. I include
episode III in that, since in spite of being better received that
episodes I and II, the ending which was supposed to inspire some
combination of negative emotions actually inspired raucus laughter
(the scene in which Vader talks to Palpatine after he's put in the
armor).
