you could get a hard one, but that could get a little uncomfortable in your
mouth all night.... :-P

seriously, i used a soft one for awhile. it makes a big difference if you
sometimes wake up with a sore jaw and a headache. wear it for a week
straight and you will be amazed. the big difference with the one the dentist
gets you is that they take an impression before they make it, so it fits
your mouth exactly.

the ones you pick up at the store are generally sports-guards. you can mold
one of those to your mouth by sticking it in boiling water, then pulling it
out and pressing it in place. it's really easy, actually. the only caveat
there is that there tends to be extra material around the edges, so you
might need to trim it with a pair of scissors or an exacto knife.
