see, I almost didn't post the story because I knew someone would say that. 

Actually, as further details comes to light, it seems that the Mexicans charged 
him with an immigration offense -- probably going more than 10 km from the 
border without a visa -- in order to expedite. They do have other warrants on 
the guy but the are giving priority to the murder of a police officer up here. 
Extradition could have been a lengthy process. Unfortunately going this route 
does involve a bond as it's something they normally charge drunken Amercans 
with. And you're all in favor of complying with the law, right, Robert? And 
keeping Americans out of Mexican jails?

Actually it seems that the breakdown in communications happened somewhere at 
the federal level, whether Mexican or American is unclear, since the original 
plan was that he was to be brought to the bridge and the deputies waited there 
for several hours before heading into Juarez to investigate.
