Actually that varies from camera to camera, for example with the Canon's the multiplier is 1.6 (so a 70-300 lens becomes a 112-480 on the smaller digitals (350D, 20D, 30D and 5D are the current UK model numbers) however the 1D has a larger sensor and so the multiplier is reduced to 1 (so a 70-300 lens is a 70-300 lens). It is also worth noting that if (like me) you use both film and digital and (like me) you use the same manufacturer for both bodies you can use the same lenses if you are careful. On the Canons the standard lens mount is the EF and all EF lenses will fit both film and digital bodies. However the digital cameras technically use an EF-S mount and EF-S lenses will NOT fit on the film EF mount (or the larger 1D digital). The best solution is to only buy the EF lenses and avoid the cheaper EF-S as they will be useful if you upgrade/change your camera at a later date. As a final note, from 30Ft away a flash is going to be pretty useless, the most powerful portable flashes are only much use up to about 15-20ft so you are going to need fast film (or a sensitive CCD) and a tripod to get anything approaching decent results, I wouldn't even try to hand-hold that shot and I have an IS lens (Canons Image Stabilised). Also the 350D isn't up to much, the 20D has just (literally within the last month) been replaced by the 30D and is now discontinued so you may get a good deal on a 20D and it isn't honestly all that different. FYI: The 350D is what you call the "Digital Rebel XT" (the Japanese call it the "Kiss Digital N") the 20D, 30D, 5D and 1D series are called the same the world over.
