Tiff and I have a copy of the Elegant Universe here and there's a guy
interviewed in the show who says that string theory is philosophy,
rather than science because there's no way for us to verify what's
going on at that scale. I don't disagree, since one of the founding
principals of science is that it must be falsifiable, so unless we're
able to produce some method of testing the theory for falseness then
it won't really be science. The correlation here is to their talk of
current HAZMAT process being insufficient. I have to wonder given the
scale of nano-tech if it would even be possible for us to contain a
malicious nano-device. We have a hard enough time with viruses
already, it seems that if someone were able to produce a malicious
device that replicated, the only way to stop it would be to build a
competitive nano-device. Being of such scale it would be impossible to
know the progress of the competitive device either. The prospect
doesn't inspire me with a whole lot of confidence.

As to the sick germans, I think they should take this as a life lesson
to be a bit less anal-retentive about their cleaning (or lazy, one of
the two). My other fear is that all glass manufacturers will begin to
treat their products with this stuff indiscriminately and make it
impossible for any of us to get untreated glass. My suspicion is that
it wouldn't be dangerous. The device is obviously liquid or suspended
in a liquid. I'm guessing it bonds to whatever surface it's applied to
and these folks accidentally got some on their hands and in their
mouths and it's repelling water from the walls of cells in the lining
of their esophagus, stomach or intestines. If the glass is
pre-treated, I would think that the solution would have bonded to the
glass and be safe to touch, but I like having options, including
options that require more effort on my part, such as toilets that I
can flush. I don't like other people taking away my ability to do
things for myself, in this case washing windows apparently.
