No, no, I did not say people should not BE religious, I said I agree with the separation. I am NOT religious, I do support the separation. Period. These men had a right to attend church and believe in a God, no problem there, same as anyone else in the world. It is the intermingling on the church with the state that is, to me, problematic. Which religion is the STATE religion? "In God we trust" could be just vague enough to be any religion. "In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost" is a lot less vague. My point being, which religion is the state religion? The majority? All? Some? Which? The founders saw this as a growing problem in a country they could see was a melting pot. They new of (fairly recent history for them) the problems encountered by most of Europe. The vagaries of religion were something they did not want to commingle with government.
Perhaps I will be bashed for this, but I feel it has great strength. I do feel it is a bit messy and has not been rigidly enforced. I feel that the people who cry about are often the very people that want to "convert" (er, sell us) on their religion. I have no problem with a person wearing a cross on their shirt, it they will not be offended by my wearing a shirt with some Satanic symbology on it, maybe a dead baby on the alter if that is my way of demonstrating my faith and belief. See, to me, that is the point. Keep it between you and God. Sure, you can find others that will feel the same as you. If so, do as we did when in school. We met at a friends house and prayed. (Yes, there was a time I felt differently about religion and God). Anyway, that is my take on it. -Gary > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 8:55 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: RE: Enron executive commits suicide > > > So, how do you feel about a president of the United States who -- > > -- > Declares a day of National Thanksgiving and invokes the > Father, the Son > and the Holy Ghost. > > -- > A president in his farewell address, repeatedly refers to God as > important to the government. > > -- > A president who attends church every Sunday in the Congressional > rotunda. > > ?? > > These are just a few examples of actions taken by three of our original > presidents, one of whom helped draft the First Amendment, all of whom were > part of the drafting of the Constitution? > > (The presidents are Adams, Washington and Jefferson -- and the interesting > thing about Jefferson is he attended a church service in the Capitol > building only two days after writing his famous "wall of separation" > letter.) > > I'm not necessarily taking side here ... just throwing out some > interesting > tidbits. > > H. > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Jon Hall [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 12:37 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: Re: Enron executive commits suicide > > > I also hearby declare that Jesus is also banned from the list. > > Since I'm not God, a Dinowitz, or the government my declaration doesn't > really matter, but I imagine if I was one of the above a lot of > people would > be pretty pissed. > That's the entire point... > > jon > .Playing Devil's Advocate for a more open minded cf-community ;-) > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Mark Stewart" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "CF-Community" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 3:05 PM > Subject: RE: Enron executive commits suicide > > > > OMG!!!
