There is a growning (or would it be re-growing) BBS community. Better systems and always on connections are making old-time Sysops like me think things like, "Ya know, I've got an AMD 200 machince sitting hter... it doesn't want to be nice and play web server, so why not set up a telnet BBS on it?"
Plus the fact that there is some AWESOME software available now. The BBS package that I'm setting up is SynchroNet. It used to be big-time commercial, now it's freeware. It's got built in telnet support, a mail server (for both incoming and outgoing), the message bases are accessable via an internal NNTP server, the file areas are available via an internal FTP server... the guy working on it is even wokrking on an internal HTTP server! Toss in the fact that there is no phone line involved and no long distance, since even the network packets (for message boards) are exchanged online. I'm still in the process of getting everything up and running... I'll post the address when I feel it's ready. Enjoy! Hatton -----Original Message----- FidoNet? BBS?
