You got lucky. Desire is not a magic pill that makes life conform to your will -- for every one of you and Tim there are at least as many people lying in the gutter. Be grateful, 'cause those great jobs and great lives are proof that you've been fortunate where others haven't. And no, my job situation isn't a result of me feeling sorry for myself -- I burry my head in my job, I work harder than most of the people I know, sometimes nearly 80 hrs a week toward my goals. I see very little if any return on my investment of sweat and I continue to push. These are not the actions of someone having a pitty party. I've seen pitty parties. I would not survive one.
