Just put your dog in the crate. Leave a Kong with peanut butter or some
other suitable treat when you put the dog in so they know it is a good place
to go. Make sure you leave water, but not too much water, you don't want
them to tip over the dish or drink too much. And don't plan on being gone
twelve hours, I think that's too long for most puppies.

Puppies learn very quickly that the crate is a safe place, and they learn
within days not to do their business in the crate. The most important thing
is to be consistent everyday with the same routine.
