This is part of the utopian fantasy and willful ignorance that is socialism. Nationalism is simply the most inefficient and unfair use of resources. The willfull ignorance part is in thinking that by having "the government" own the resources somehow they'll used in the manner that's best for the country. That experiment was called the USSR. It turns out, as surprising as it is, that government is actually made up not of benevolent glowing beings, but people. And those people have all of the same weaknesses as you and I. Consequently they use their access to the money tree for their own gain, shutting out the rest of the country.
