There was a thing on volcanoes the other week narrated by Locutus of The Discovery Channel. They postulated that we are currently in a short period (geologically speaking) of low volcanic and tectonic activity. They seem to imply that for the past 5000+ years, humans have enjoyed a rather stable earth. A stability that does not account for a big chunk of the global volcanic and tectonic cycle. The cycle they postulated was like this:
Tectonic plates shift, causing more eruptions. These eruptions spew greenhouse gases which trap heat. The trapped heat elevates the global temperature melting more polar ice. As the sea levels rise, they put cantilever forces on the edge of the continental plates, which presses down on the magma causing more eruptions. This continues until there is enough particulate matter in the atmosphere to block the sun. The earth surface starts to cool, and an ice age kicks in. The ice freezing is promoted by the fact that all of the new snow and ice covering significant portions of the planet is now reflecting a majority of the sun's radiation back into space. Then, as the greenhouse gases again begin to collect in the atmosphere, the planet warms and the process starts all over again. As to global warming, I read a recent article about a group of scientists who study mountain ice depths between 30 degrees north and 30 degrees south of the equator. Kilimanjaro has lost 80 percent of it's ice in the last 80 years and will be gone, they predict, by 2020. > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 10:30 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: RE: Global Warming (Re: Enron executive commits suicide) > > > Global Warming is a lot of hot air. > > There is no way, in the slender slice of environmental history we > have, that > we can accurately predict the effects of carbon dioxide. > Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists ______________________________________________________________________ Your ad could be here.
