I've taken the safety courses and such --and you are right.  With the right
gear and some common sense, you stand a very good chance of survival.  

For every 'bad motorcycle accident' story, I've got at LEAST one horrible
car accident story.

My biggest thought if my bike goes down is to get my leg out from under it.

Yep, for most people. other drivers are the problem. For some people,
especially ones with racing bikes that could run a moto-gp race today, they
are the problem.

Without a helmet, you don't need to worry about the neck.
With a helmet and decent jacket (and riding pants and boots and lay-down
pegs on the bike), you stand a good chance of limping away.

As my brother in law said last weekend - make sure the bike is sliding in
front of you. That way, it takes down the little trees, and gives you one
good push-off to change your direction and miss the big one.
