I understand that both bases vote and it's the republican base that's
more volitile.  The reason a larger turn out favors Democrats is
because it means a 4th election group has showed up: a coalition of
the youth/fringe/hippie vote.

Kerry counted on this "4th factor", the youth, and they didn't show.
Bush won because he mobilized his base, brought in the fringe, and
swung independents.  Iraq was a major factor in that swing, but now
it's swung the other way.

Whether it'll be that way in November is anyone's guess.
