I agree, but my point was more to ask this question: what kind of
opposition does an Iraq occupation generate?

That is, even if we were to eliminate Al Quaeda in Iraq, that doesn't
create peace.  Which means we'll still be needed for "security", which
means we'll still be seen as occupiers by some, which creates maybe
the best comparison:

The French occupation of Algiers.
