I've got to tell you... since I've been here at Microsoft, I've seen nothing
but problems with other software trying to run on Windows. MS puts out
terrific software that is heavily tested, and they give out APIs so that
others can write software that runs on Windows. I've seen tons of cases
where the customer calls in with a problem with IIS crashing, or their
application does something strange, and 9999 out of 10000 times it's not a
problem with Microsoft software. JRUN crashes, ColdFusion doesn't work
right, PHP is refuses to run... and then we not only try to fix the
problem, but we put out hotfixes for our software so theirs doesn't break.
Cases that aren't crashes are configuration issues - the customer doesn't
know how to use his machine and blames MS. If you don't know how to use it,
how is that our fault?
Say what you will about MS, but we're all lucky that there's one
predominate platform for computers or we'd be going crazy. You think
writing websites for multiple browsers is difficult? The OS is similar to a
road - it's got certain protocols that must be followed, many different
things running on it, and sometimes it's under construction, but at least
everybody can use it.
We pay the government for roads, somebody's got to get paid to write the
OS.
