They're out of the same family. Berners, Pyrs, St.Bernards, Leonbergers and
Newfoundlands are all related. Out of all of them Pyrs have the longest life
span at 10-12 years. We were gonna get a Berner, but the life spans are SO
short (6-9 years) that it would've broken our hearts just as his or hers
personality had just really blossomed.

All of these dogs are big lovable goofs and very intellegent. I've never
seen any of them that weren't gentle giants. We go to a "doggie happy hour"
in Old Town Alexandria, and there's a huge Newfoundland, that just loves to
roll over and have his belly scratched, he'll lay there for hours as long as
someone walks by and gives him a good scratch

So far shedding hasn't been an issue, but his adult double coat is just now
starting to grow in.

Now I'm all melancholy, Mac is at the vet's overnight 'cause he got
neutered, and he had to have one of his dewclaws removed, 'cause the nail
was spiraling.. I miss my boy (and his drool)

They're beautiful dogs! (Lots of hair, though, right?) Are they
related to Bernese mountain dogs? I wondered if the White that the
Berners have may come from or be related to the Pyreneans.
