That's a big part of my point, actually.  I'm going to start testing 
stuff with IE7 soon,but I'd rather be on a stable IE6 than a brand 
spanking new IE7.

As for the firefox issue, that automatic update was almost certainly a 
minor update.  I'd be surprised if Mozilla pushed out Firefox 2.0 
automatically to all Firefox 1.5 users when it becomes available.
