have them check the rim of the "thumping" tire.

We had a problem similar to this in our '93 Corolla.

A dealership mechanic diagnosed it as tie rods with the possible
replacement of the rack and pinion assembly, took it for a second
opinion at our regular mechinic and he checked the rims, hammered it
out and solved the problem.
