Did you launch the Vista install from the boot disc or from within XP? I had some real problems with RAID drivers and networking when I did a "fresh" install from the boot disc but none at all when I did an "upgrade" install from within XP. Note that in both cases you can still install Vista to a different partition so you don't lose your existing XP install. But Vista seems to inherit certain settings from XP during an upgrade regardless of where you install it.
