That's great question.  Thanks to Bush's colossal Iraq feck up we've
limited our options hugely, but, as I posted earlier, you have to use
the combination of diplomacy and a military threat.

1.) We need to align our allies behind *a* policy (not necessarily ours).

2.) We need to engage with Iran diplomatically with our allies and
make clear what the consequences are.

3.) We need to frank about giving in to some of their wishes of
regional control.

As difficult as that sounds, we have too because Bush's Iraq feck up
gives us no choice.  The Bush policy now is hope the whole problem
solves itself.  It won't.

So we've got to start thinking seriously about concession that'll
freeze the current situation until we can extract oursevles from Iraq
and therefore present a real military to Iran.  Possibly we invade and
eliminate the Mullahs.

But we can't even start thinking about those options until we clean up
Bush's mess of choice.
