It's a tragedy, but what was he and an instructor doing so near
buildings?  By law they'll be autopsied so we'll likely find out who
was behind the controls (they check for broken thumbs and feet) and if
there were any other factors.

Based on the info it's hard to understand how this would've happened
by anything else than a mechanical failure, but he could've just been
going so slow he stalled it, tried to get altitude and winged into a
building.
