I would say that some people are incredibly short-sighted, and would
back something that would be horrible for the rest of the country, yet
good for a very local populace (a tax of 80% of all earnings on
everyone that does not live in Maine, with all money going to people
within 60 miles of Stephen King.).

Fortunately, most representatives historically have been more far
sighted, and sometimes passed up local benefit for national benefit.

I don't that should be the norm, but the representative should be
willing to "do the right thing" when neccessary.

For much the same reason, I vote for local school board initiatives,
even though I have no kids.

Unfortunately, many of the reps no longer are willing to do this.
Bread and circuses for all. Instead, they say "You can have whatever
you want, as long as I get mine, too".
