Run, don't walk. I've been in the same situation as the person not in the little group, with the manager at the helm of the clique. It's impossible to break into it with any kind of dignity left to you, especially when they start accusing YOU of being anti-social and unfriendly. In my case the manager thought he was pulling some kind of Sun-Tzu Art of War voodoo -- isolate the perceived weakest member of the team by cultivating a clique with other co-workers to ultimately make the whole group stronger. Whatever. Crap like that always backfires and creates unnecessary discord that removes the focus away from the actual work. It's demoralizing and insulting, but that's how some managers operate. Everything's about competition, survival of the fittest, blah, blah, blah. It's bulls***.
Now, I'm not saying that's necessarily what's going on here, at least not consciously, buy you've already been given multiple warning signs that something's afoot -- they're not honoring promises (the flex time), they're not giving you the tools you need to succeed (the dev account, the code editor, the database, and proximity to the rest of the team), they're creating an atmosphere of them vs. you. It sounds like they're more interested in "hanging out", cracking jokes, and acting buddy-buddy than in working, and, since you have some actual workplace integrity, that bugs you and rightly so since you're there to do your job. Life's too short to be miserable and, believe me, there are LOTS of places with interesting work that will open their arms to you and be GLAD to have you there. Shawna E.
