Its great if you can get an older and or alpha dog to show the new one where
to go etc.

Also, catching in the act and making a big deal is the key. Make sure you
use a deep voice. no need to hit. There are plenty of ways to establish
dominance without hitting.

Someone told me that if you knew your dog had to go but was refusing to do
it in the right place, you could stick a matchstick in its rectum. Then when
it tried to squeeze the match stick out(which they will do right away), you
make sure he's in the right spot and praise highly when something comes
out.
