I dunno. The majority of the country is moderate or centrist. So why do so
many politicians pay us mere lip service, while catering more to their base,
which tends to lean farther right or left?

The answer can be found in voting demographics. Far right's and far left's
may represent only 40% of the country...but 90+% of them vote.

Rally your base, win the election. Generally, they can take for granted a
certain percentage of the independents who vote. What they sometimes
overlook though is the potential for the independents to rally should things
get too far one way or the other. Just ask Rove and the Republican senators
and representatives who are suddenly without a job.
