I was leery (very leery) until I saw the trailer. My all time favorite movies are Rocky I and II (I refuse to acknowledge the existence of 3-5). Both were so character driven. When my wife finally watched Rocky I with me, she was shocked at how much she enjoyed it for that reason (she thought it was going to be a movie about boxing/fighting, but it was a movie about a person who just wanted to prove that he wasn't a bum).
Rocky II was excellent as well. With Rocky III, it got over-the-top silly. Suddenly there was no more concern about him going blind (which was a huge concern in Rocky II). Butkus got written out. He was no longer a man who was just an adequate boxer (if that) who won because he had heart. He was suddenly an amalgam of 80's action heroes that were invulnerable. In Rocky IV, the Russian kills Apollo with a handful of punches. Rocky (the same Rocky who, if you believe in continuity, was going to go blind with a single punch to the eye) steps in and pulls the "c'mon, you ain't so bad" taking punch after punch. Don't even get me started on the robot early on in the movie. Rocky V tried to go back to "the roots", and IMO was better than Rocky III or IV because it tried to be more character driven...but it missed the mark. >From what I can see in the trailer for "Rocky Balboa", he's human again. Not an indestructible machine. He's justifiably concerned about getting "mangled" or "embarassed". Just like in Rocky I, where he wanted to prove he's not a bum...in Rocky Balboa he just wants to go "toe to toe" to say, "I am". It's not about winning. It's about being true to who you are. Also worth noting, just for the "oh, cool" factor... the girl in the trailer who says, "fighters fight" (which is a great line) is the girl from the original Rocky movie...it's the girl he tried to persuade not to be a "whore". Yeah, i'm psyched for this movie :) On 11/16/06, Scott Mulholland <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Yeah, I won't be able to pass it up im sure.
