My (eight year old) son has shown some interest in keyboards/pianos. Nothing serious, but he LOVES playing with them so we thought we might get him one for his birthday.
We're leaning towards an electronic keyboard for cost and space reasons but a small upright piano isn't completely out of the question I suppose. Of course we're a little concerned that he's only eight so we might spend a lot of money on something he never touches. At the same time I don't want to get so cheap and flimsy that we sabotage him from the start. (My daughters four... so even if he loses interest there's a chance she'll want to give it a shot.) It would also be nice to get him something that he could take lessons on (or at least something that if he took lessons on real piano that he could practice on at home). My feature set, then (which is pretty broad) is: +) A full-sized keyboard (preferably with weighted, piano-like keys). +) It should have a headphone jack (I assume they all do). He's sometimes shy and being able to play without others listening would be good for him. +) It would be nice if it connected to a computer (preferably via USB since his SFF PC doesn't have a MIDI port) such that teaching software would function. +) Sturdy enough to take an eight-year olds play. We're hoping (doesn't everybody?) for everything we want in a cheap package but realistically we know we'll be spending a tidy sum. Still... what's "pricey"? Can you get a decent keyboard for $100? $300? More? Thanks in advance.
