My wife is Catholic and I am Agnostic. As has already been stated, I don't know if there is a god, there very well may be. If there is an all loving god, and we are his children, then I doubt he is so egotistical as to say that if I do not worship him I must go to hell. Then again, we could all be creatures inside the jar of the kid in the FarSide cartoons.
I would like to think there is a god. I would like to think he / she is an all loving god. But there is a nagging thought in the back of my head that its just to convinient of a way to control people, or its just a great crutch, In bad times, it's gods will blah blah blah. In good times, I could have never done it without the help of god, blah blah blah. None the less, I do want my children to have a good education. The public schools here, well they suck. So my children go to Catholic school. I think there is a better quality of people (parents, teachers, children ..) there than in the public school. I would like to think they supporting the moral, ethical, caring characteristics we are trying to teach our children. I do however, have problems from time to time when the 5 year old starts singing Jesus tunes. Or when she asks things like "Daddy, Is the chruch really the house of God?, because I never see him there, I don't think he lives there anymore". Or Daddy, how do you get to Heaven? Well sweetie, you uh, well, by being a good girl. You play nice with your sister and friends. You do the things Mommy and Daddy tell you. You mind grown ups like Grandma and Grandpa and teachers at school. You are nice to your friends and other people. You help people, remember when we gave away some of your toys for kids that don't have toys, and how we buy christmas presents for people we don't know because they don't have as much as we do. That's how you get to heaven by being good. Good people get to go to heaven. Daddy, don't bad people want to go to heaven too? At this point I'm thinking ah christ go ask your mother. But.. Well yes honey they do. But they need to be good to get into heaven. Now what? do I tell her that she can help people get into heaven by telling them to be good instead of bad otherwise they don't get into heaven? Ugh, Now I'm teling my daughter to be an evangalist. It's hard when she wants to pray before dinner. Or when at a school functino they pray before wahtever they are about to do. I generally try to bow out when I see it coming. I try to be supportive of the churches doctrine and my wifes beliefs. Besides the kids are too young to be messing with their heads. You, some people believe that there is a Jesus he and god are one in the same. Others don't believe in God. Some believe in God but think Jesus was just a great man, but not the son of God. Daddy doesn't really now what to believe. There is no hard evidence and daddy doesn't really believe in faith. All great cons exploit faith and trust and daddy doesn't feel like getting conned.
