In the same way that many law schools teach via the Socratic method.
It's not just that he existed, it's that he created a body of work and
a philosophy that can be followed today.

That is, you can believe in and follow Jesus' philosophy without
believing he was divine.  Were you to do that you wouldn't look much
different than a Christian except on Christmas and Easter.  And even
those days would still be special to you due to his birth and death.
