Here's a short list about ISO 9000 Certification from the British Standards
Institution:

ISO Certification means that an organization conforms to a set of rules
known as a management system, which are designed to ensure the company is
delivering quality products by means of well documented, repeatable
processes. These processes come to be the manifestation of a thing called
'Quality', which, strictly defined, means this organization is giving its
customer what they ask for.

EVERYTHING anyone does in an organization is a product; as such, all efforts
are subject to being documented to ensure they are directed at this thing
called Quality.

Some text from their Web site:

Sounds simple enough... but there are few organizations capable of achieving
certification. It takes a long time, costs lots of money, and auditors can
be vicious if you do anything to offend them.

The BSI offers a lot of other certifications as well, in environmental
reqponsibility, aerospace, telecom, automotive, Information security,
technology, etc. Just because your organization is ISO certified does not
mean it meets the standards for any of these other cert's.

I have worked for a Web shop seeking ISO certification, and they looked like
they were well on their way to getting there.

In the US, ISO right now is pretty much limited to manufacturing
companies. Everyone in the automotive industry is going that way. And I
believe the US government almost requires it from their suppliers. There
are no laws requiring it but finished product manufacturers are more and
more requiring all of their suppliers to be ISO.
