Yeah, I was following this one too. I see both sides, but I take the
side of open source. My skills have progressed quickly because of
places like these lists and the web sites that post their code. When i
learned FuseBox, I gained far more knowledge by looking through the code
then I would had if I had only read the book. If I had to pay for the
code, I wouldn't have. I most likely would have dropped it right there.
Instead, I looked at the code and read the information and then bought
the book because I saw the value of it. Plus I wanted to be able to
support the developers in some way. Now, I haven't made any
contributions to further development, but every developer I meet that
asks about CF, I tell them about FuseBox and how great it is.

(I'm moving this thread over here... if Alex reads this list then we
can get
some conversation going on this side... I've been spanked too much
this
month already for keeping OT threads alive on the CF-Talk List)

(*chuckles*) Yes, there are dupes but not that many ;)

For those who didn't catch the original thread on the CF-Talk list,
here's
the original post from Douglas Brown:

I know this is not the place for this, but I just have to ask this
question of the community. What is the benefit of developing a
commercial grade application and then giving that application away for
free? I see message boards out there where people have obviously spent
hours and hours of development time and effort, just to turn around
and
give the thing away. Is this type of mentality not hurting the
development community? I understand that a message board is not that
huge of a deal, but some people are trying to make a living developing
such items. Is it not more beneficial to design a product and sale it
for the going rate of such an application? I am eager to hear what
everyones thoughts are on this subject. I would have posted to the
community list, but hardly anyone really reads it.

  Enjoy!
